The Blackwall Tunnel, which was closed after an asbestos spill, has been reopened. Officials said that it was reopened two hours earlier than expected.
Transport for London (TfL) is now trying to catch the driver who is responsible for dropping the asbestos on to the carriageway of the tunnel.
"Not only was this driver reckless in failing to secure the load but they also failed to stop at the scene of the potentially very serious incident," a TfL spokesperson said.
The tunnel was closed from Wednesday 1230 BST after two 20kg bags containing brown asbestos fell from a van in the northbound carriageway through the tunnel.
Workers cleaned up the way through the night to clear the spillage and the tunnel was reopened after 20 hours hard work. Air quality tests had been carried out before it was reopened.
"We are pleased to report that, following all night work by Transport for London staff and specialist contractors, the Blackwall Tunnel is open in both directions this morning," a transport for London spokesperson said.
Blackwall Tunnel is a free road tunnel underneath the River Thames in east London, between Blackwall Point in East Greenwich and East India Dock Road in Poplar. This tunnel was the easternmost river crossing for vehicles, excluding ferries before the opening of the Dartford Tunnel in 1963. The Blackwall Tunnel is a notorious traffic bottleneck too.
