Roosevelt High School is carrying out an asbestos removal job though children are still roaming the halls and classrooms.
The school is still open. According to the school officials, there is nothing to worry however, many parents are concerned about this. Contractors cleaned up asbestos in the school the last two days.
Some parents complain that they were not told about the cleanup. They ask why the asbestos removal job is being done when kids are still there in the school when everybody is aware of the health risks involved.
“I don`t understand why they didn`t tell parents and say the gym is contained. The timing may not be right," said Jim MacDonald, a Roosevelt parent.
Many parents are not happy about the asbestos removal job in the school which started just days before they let out for summer.
Melissa Arnold, another Roosevelt parent said, "I think they should have waited until everyone was gone then they`d be good to go."
However, the school officials says that there are no concerns at all.
“That’s two weeks we would have lost. There was never any danger," said Roy Turner, schools` facilities manager.
Asbestos is a combination of several minerals that separate into long, threadlike fibers. This was a commonly used material once in construction jobs. Still, this can be found in many old schools. The fibers can be easily inhaled and this can cause many severe health hazards. Life threatening diseases like Asbestosis, Mesothelioma etc can be developed due to the exposure to asbestos.
