HSE Charges Demolition Company

Wye Valley Demolition Ltd has been fined around £20,000 for the release of asbestos during the demolition of a former grain store building in Bodenham. Wye Valley Demolition Ltd is one of the leading companies in the UK in the field of demolition and site clearance.

The company admitted two charges of violating asbestos control acts brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). They pleaded guilty to breaches of Regulation 10(1) and Regulation 15 of the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002

The issue was regarding the demolition work done by Wye Valley Demolition Ltd in June 2004. An old grain store at Bodenham was torn down. Asbestos cement sheets were smashed to the ground by a machine and then scattered over the site during the work. HSE found that asbestos removal was not under controlled conditions.

Wye Valley Demolition was fine £3,000 on each charge. Also, the bench has ordered the company to pay costs of £13,621,49.

After the prosecution, the HSE warned companies to take extra care while demolishing buildings containing asbestos cement sheets.
