The demolition of the Troy University residence hall has been postponed due to a delay in asbestos removal.
As per the earlier announcement of Troy University, the dormitory would have been taken down some time this week. But more asbestos were found in the building, as a result of which t building will remain standing a few additional days.
It has not been decided when to start the demolition again however, officials said it would begin as soon as possible.
Asbestos abatement was started the last week. According to Jade Anderson, the project manager, workers found an old asbestos tiles layer under two other layers of flooring during the work.
"There is asbestos is in every room and disposing of it properly will take time," Anderson said.
He added that they had to take the time to make sure the material was safely disposed of.
Dill Hall housed approximately 175 students each semester. It was built in 1959 which was later converted to apartment-style dorm rooms.
A new $13-million College of Education building with 15 classrooms and 46 faculty offices has been planned to be constructed in place of the leveled building. The project is supposed to start by July 1.
The Dill Hall building's demolition is expected to be the starting point for numerous construction and maintenance projects involving Troy academic buildings.
