Asbestos Presence Confirmed at City Hall East

Raising concerns to many Atlanta police officers, an investigation report confirmed the presence of asbestos in the City Hall East. The report confirms that the police officers were definitely exposed to asbestos two weeks ago.

The report also says that there is nothing to worry, as the exposure is too small. However, there are concerns still as the material is asbestos.

It was a maintenance worker who discovered the material first on the seventh floor of City Hall East about two weeks ago. Some of the material fell down to the carpet in the ground. This raised a concern immediately that the material could be asbestos since the building was too old. It was sent for inspection.

There will be a clean-up in that office as the inspectors have confirmed the material was asbestos.

"There wasn't anything in the air to be concerned, with so we're going to go in with what we call our HEPAVCS -- which is designed to filter asbestos, because asbestos fibers are very tiny. So we use specialized vacuum cleaners and water and wet wipes and things of that sort to kind of clean the air out and wipe off any horizontal surfaces,”

Asbestos is a combination of several minerals that separate into long, threadlike fibers. Because they do not bum, do not conduct heat or electricity, and are very resistant to chemicals, these minerals are often used for making fireproof materials, electrical insulation, roofing, filters, etc. The fibers can be easily inhaled. Asbestos can cause many diseases, including cancer. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by this deadly substance. Symptoms of the disease, which can be found in the linings of the lungs and abdomen, may not appear for decades after exposure. But it kills more than half of its victims within seven months of diagnosis.
