South Australian Asbestos Victim Sues Comcare

Lexley James Opie, 78, from South Australia is suing a Commonwealth authority after he was diagnosed with a lung cancer related to asbestos exposure.

Opie claims that the negligence of the Authority led to him contracting the deadly disease from exposure to asbestos.

Opie was a worker on the wharves at Port Adelaide from 1953 until 1987.

According to the law suit filed at SA District Court, Mr Opie was exposed to asbestos fibres during unloading from ships. He handled the material around the docks also, the claim states.

Opie was diagnosed with a lung cancer last year, which he believes to be caused due to exposure to asbestos and pathetic working conditions.

Opie alleges that the former Australian Stevedoring Industry Authority didn't provide him with any safety equipments or advice regarding the safe methods of working with and around asbestos. He was exposed to asbestos fibers as a result of their negligence and later developed an asbestos-related disease.
