The owner of the Congress Building in midtown was asked to post signs warning tenants and the public of possible asbestos contamination. This was ordered by the Kansas City Health Department on Friday.
As per the order, Del R. Hedgepath, the owner of the building at 3535 Broadway, should post the signs in common areas and in public parking areas of the building before 5 p.m. today.
Additionally, the department ordered to seal the office houses Titan Environmental Services. Titan Environmental Services is one of the many offices that the building houses.
The order was released by the department after they received an anonymous tip on Monday regarding various asbestos-containing materials in the building and possible health risks. The department made an investigation and they tell that asbestos materials were observed throughout the garage structure. Apart from this, a large debris pile of asbestos-containing substances also was found in the lower garage area.
According to the department, the materials are in such a condition that they could possibly discharge asbestos fibers into the air and cause many health hazards for the tenants in the building.
Hedgepath was ordered to submit his plans for controlling the emissions of any particulate matter, including the asbestos fibers, by 5 p.m. Tuesday. Additionally, He has to submit a plan to conduct external air monitoring for asbestos fibers in at least two locations.
Hedgepath as well as the Titan Environmental representatives declined to comment anything for the time being.
