Bloomington Couple Win $3.8 Million in Asbestos Compensation

BLOOMINGTON - Daniel Malcolm, a former Bloomington High School teacher, and his wife are to accept around $3.8 million in damages from several defendants including an asbestos manufacturing company Pneumo Abex Corp.

The lawsuit had been filed by Malcolm in May 2006 in McLean County Circuit Court.

The court records say that Mr Malcolm has agreed to settle claims against his defendants.

Malcolm was a High School teacher in Bloomington from 1968 to July 1994. Before that, he was working at a foundry at Caterpillar's East Peoria plant from June to August 1964.

Malcolm had alleged in his complaint that he was exposed to lethal asbestos fibres at the school as well as foundry assignments. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in the year 2006. Mesothelioma is a noncancerous or malignant tumor affecting the lining of the chest or abdomen. Exposure to asbestos particles in the air increases the risk of developing malignant mesothelioma. Symptoms of this incurable disease are persistent coughing or coughing of blood, chest or abdomen pain, fatigue, and weight loss. These symptoms may not appear for decades after exposure however, it kills more than half of its victims within seven months after the diagnosis.
