Several companies and individuals were fined by the state Department of Environmental Protection for breach of the commonwealth's asbestos regulations that took place in Springfield, Northampton and Westfield.
A $4,000 penalty will be paid by Fleet Environmental Services, Randolph. They were charged for improper handling and disposal of caulking and window glazing material that contained asbestos during a window replacement project at Edgewater Towers in Springfield.
Phyllis Cove, Auburndale has to pay the penalty for violation of asbestos regulations at a rental property at 46 Ridgewood Terrace in Northampton. State environmental agents had received a complaint from the tenants of the building and the further investigation confirmed that a new boiler had been installed and the old asbestos insulated boiler and pipes had been cut out with a saw and left on the basement floor. Phyllis Cove will be charged $2,500.
Borges Construction Co., of Ludlow will pay a penalty of $8,000 for removing sections of asbestos-containing water line during a routine inspection of a water and sewer line replacement project. Their action was without proper work practices or prior notice to the agency.
The Freitas Construction Co., Ludlow was asked for a fine for the excavation of water lines containing asbestos without the proper state permits, and the subsequent crushing of the pipes within excavation trenches. The violation was taken place in the Eastwood Estates in Westfield. They have to pay an amount of $6,000 as fine.
Michael J. Gorski, director of the agency's western regional office in Springfield appeared extremely satisfied on the action.
"We will continue to aggressively seek compliance with these very important public health regulations," he said.
