Pizza Chef Wins Six Figure Sum in Asbestos Case
A 60-year old Italian Pizza chef, who claimed that he was exposed to toxic asbestos fibers while working in a restaurant kitchen, has won a six-figure sum as compensation.
Luigi Pes developed malignant mesothelioma, an incurable form of cancer, after working with pizza ovens that had asbestos seals and asbestos-lined ceiling in the regularly using storeroom. The only known reason for mesothelioma is asbestos exposure.
Pes was exposed to the cancer-causing material while working at the La Gondola restaurant in the 1980’s. He was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma in 2008 February. Pes argued that his fatal disease was caused by the dangerous working atmosphere at the restaurant.
Pes said he was not aware of the hazards of asbestos when he was being exposed to the material. He says he should have been better protected by his previous employers. The restaurant became out of business in 2005.
The case against the restaurant insurers has been settled out of court. Though the amount of compensation has not been disclosed, it is believed to be in the region of six figures.
