A dying mesothelioma patient is planning to join Sen. Patty Murray Friday in Seattle to support the need for laws to Prohibit the use of asbestos in the US.
Judy Clauson, who is suffering from the deadly cancer caused by asbestos exposure at this young age of 44, says that her remaining days are precious however, for the sake of next generation she would like to do this.
"There is no reason for anyone to be using asbestos anymore. There is other material that can do the same thing that isn't lethal. Asbestos kills. I'm proof of that," Clauson said.
Dr. Richard Lemen, former U.S. assistant surgeon general said that now-a-days he is seeing mesothelioma patients who are younger, who are women and who have never worked with asbestos. Lemen said that Clauson is an example for this.
Clauson said that her doctors could not believe that she had mesothelioma as she was too young.
"I was too young and I never worked with asbestos. They treated me for all sorts of problems, but when my lungs filled with fluid, they finally figured it out," Clauson said. "My doctors finally determined that my exposure to asbestos was from my former husband who had been working at a metal foundry in Hoquiam."
Clauson said that her former husband would come home every day covered head to toe in heavy black dust and she didn't know the dust contained asbestos as she had no clue.
Clauson said that doctors can now do nothing for her survival.
"The doctors told me that chemo and radiation and the like will only add a month or two to my life. I passed. I'm just going to live out what I have day by day," she said.
Clauson said that a ban won't help the present victims however, it might prevent the next generation from getting asbestos disease.
