A 50 year old mesothelioma patient from Durham has been awarded a significant amount of compensation from the chemical company where his father was working with.
The dad of Nicholas Trowbridge, Mr Michael was a plant manager at ICI in Teesside from 1957 to 1975.
Nicholas was sure that he got mesothelioma from his father's working dress and he launched a legal bid against the organization in February.
He was awarded a remarkable amount on Friday in an out-of-court settlement.
Nicholas said that he was happy that has finally been laid to rest for himself and his father.
"I hope people with similar problems get their compensation and the Government brings in legislation to speed up these cases," he said.
Nicholas said that his father would come in from the Teesside plant wearing his work clothes and used to play with him when he was a child. He thinks that he inhaled asbestos fibres then which caused the deadly disease he is suffering from. Astonishingly, his father, who is 76 now, has not developed any symptoms.
In 1995 Nicholas first began having breathing difficulties. His doctors diagnosed this as asthmatic. However, the symptoms gradually worsened so terribly that he had to rush into the hospital on December 25, 2005.
Then his doctors realized that he had mesothelioma.
"My condition is terminal, but is placed on new chemotherapy drug Alimta," he said.
Memory loss, hot and cold sweats, depression, muscle problems and breathing difficulties are the main health issues he is facing.
"The money will fund a special holiday and help me enjoy my remaining days," he said.
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer, usually found in those exposed to asbestos, in the form of a malignant tumor in the mesothelium of the lungs and or abdomen. It is said that more than 2000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year in the UK. One in thousand people get the disease without being exposed directly to the deadly substance.
