Jefferson Elementary School in Massena was closed after an asbestos test conducted in a classroom resulted positive.
The inspectors told that they conducted tests in three classrooms on Saturday. Though no asbestos was airborne, a swipe test in one of the classrooms showed positive result.
The swipe test known as qualitative test detected a presence of asbestos in the classroom. The quantity of asbestos will be determined after a follow up swipe test which called quantitative test. The school officials says that the quantitative test didn't detect asbestos.
In the past, asbestos had been found on a loading dock and in the boiler room at the school.
Douglas W. Huntley, the superintendent of the school received the Atlantic Testing results late Monday afternoon and decided to close the building.
"We are in great hopes the school will open very shortly. We understand the inconvenience that closing a school imposes on families. However, a few days are little to sacrifice in order to test all classrooms for asbestos and take corrective action where necessary," he said.
Doug wants students to be out of school about two days. He said that the school has emergency closing days to make it up.
"If we go over two days then we are into the final week of school, where there are two days at the end of the school year that elementary students don't attend," he said.
"Our next step is dependent upon the outcome of the classroom testing," he added.
